Turkey Will Have Three Muslim Mayors Wearing Hijabs

TurkeyElectsThree-Viled-MayorsDDHK News, Turkey - Turkey will have three Muslim mayors wearing hijabs. The three of them - two of whom are cadres of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) - won the most votes in local elections.

The first candidate, Fatma Toru, successfully won votes in the Meram district of Konya. Her colleague, Hawa Yildrim, also won the mayor's seat in Gudul, Ankara. The third is Beriva Elif Kilic, who is a representative of Kurtdi in Kocakoy, Diyabakir.

This development is not surprising. This is such a great momentum, which began with the lifting of the ban on veiling on state institutions, campuses and began targeting council members.

In October, a member of the Turkish parliament for the first time wore a headscarf and entered parliament. Previously, this was taboo for secular Turkey.

AKP Wins Badly

The election of the three Muslim women who wear headscarves as mayors cannot be separated from the landslide victory of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Turkey's local elections by controlling the majority of areas, including the capital Ankara and the megapolitan Istanbul. Nearing the end of the vote count on Monday (31/3), the party led by Recep Tayyip Erdogan received 45,56 percent.

The main opposition party CHP won the area on the west coast and nationally gained 27,9 percent. BDP, the pro-Kurdish party, recorded a victory in the South with a 4 percent gain.

Welcoming this victory, Erdogan expressed his gratitude and thanked the Turkish people who continued to believe in the AKP amid the continuous 'conspiracy' attacks directed at his party.

This victory in the local elections is also proof that the attacks on Turkey have failed and that the Turkish people have protected the new independence that Turkey has fought for together.

"You have protected the struggle for new independence in Turkey," said Erdogan, who was welcomed by his supporters.

The AKP's victory was also welcomed by the Muslim world. In Sarajevo, Bosnia, Muslims welcomed the AKP's victory. In Gaza, Erdogan's supporters cheered the AKP's victory and raised three flags; Turkey, Egypt and Palestine.
