143 Countries Support Palestine Becoming Full Member of the UN, 9 Refuse
A total of 143 countries supported Palestine in the vote held by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly to determine a resolution regarding Palestine's membership. Palestinian supporters won an absolute victory against 9 countries that refused.
These results were welcomed by the President of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas. He said that the adoption of the resolution shows that the world stands with the rights and freedoms of the Palestinian people, and opposes Israeli aggression. "The world is with the Palestinian people," said Abbas, as reported by CNN Indonesia.
A total of 9 countries that refuse to allow Palestine to become a full member of the UN are Argentina, Czechia, Hungary, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, as well as the United States and Israel. Apart from that, there are 25 countries that have abstained.
The United Nations (UN) General Assembly held a vote this Friday (10/5) to determine a resolution regarding Palestine's membership. The resolution will later grant new "rights and privileges" to Palestine and ask the Security Council (DK) to reconsider Palestine's request to become the 194th member of the UN.
Previously, the United States (US) vetoed a UN Security Council draft resolution regarding Palestine's efforts to become a full member of the organization. The draft resolution was initiated by Algeria, which is currently a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
The UNSC resolution, which was vetoed by the US, would pave the way for full Palestinian membership in the UN, a goal that has long been sought by Palestine and has been thwarted by Israel. However, unlike in the Security Council, there is no veto power in the 193-member General Assembly.
