The Messenger of Allah Hijra: Events on the Journey to Medina (Part 7)

DDHK.ORG — Here are some things that happened on the way (to Medina):

  1. Al-Bukhari narrated from Abu Bakr Ash-Siddiq ra., he said, “We traveled all night non-stop until noon. The streets were deserted and no one passed there. We got a big rock. On the side is not exposed to sunlight so it can be for shade. We stopped at that place. I leveled the place with my hands for sleeping, I spread the head scarf and said, 'Sleep, O Messenger of Allah, let me blow around you.' So he fell asleep and I blew around him. Suddenly I saw a shepherd came to my place, this big rock, also with the intention of taking shelter.

"Whose shepherd are you?" I ask.

"Someone from the people of Medina," or he replied, "Someone from the people of Makkah."

"Are there any of your sheep that can be milked?"

"Yes," answered the shepherd.

"Would you like to blush?"

"Yes," he answered, picking up a sheep.

"Blow the milk to get rid of the dust, hair and dirt," I said.

The shepherd milked and I brought a bag of water for drinking and ablution. I went to the Prophet who was still sleeping. I was reluctant to wake him up. I handed him after he woke up. Pour water into the milk so that the bottom cools down.

"Drink, O Messenger of Allah!" So he drank and I was satisfied.

"Isn't it time now to move on?" He asked.

"Yes," I replied. So we continued our journey.

  1. One of Abu Bakr's habits was riding behind the Prophet . While he is an old man who is well known, he is younger and not much is known. On the way there was a man asked Abu Bakr, "Who is the person in front of you?"

Abu Bakr replied, "He is the one who showed me the way."

The person thought that what was meant was a travel guide. But what Abu Bakr meant was the way of goodness.

  1. Their journey was followed by Suraqah bin Malik. Suraqah said, "While I was sitting at a meeting organized by my people, the Bani Mudlij, suddenly a man from my people came to my place. While we were all sitting around. The man said to me, "O Suraqah, I saw some people traveling on the coast. I thought he was Muhammad and his companions."

I believe that this man meant Muhammad and his companions. But I told him, "That's not them. All you see is so and so and so and so going so we don't see it."

I remained in the meeting for a while. After a while I got up and went home. I told my maid to get the horse out from behind the hill and wait for me there until I came. I took the spear and I exited the house through the back door until I reached my horse's place.

I raced my horse hard. But when I got close to Muhammad and his companions, my horse slipped and I fell down. I immediately got up again. I picked up the quiver and took out the arrows, but I hesitated to use them, should I aim at them or not.

I got on my horse again and I raced again until I was close to them. When I could hear the recitation of the Messenger of Allah who did not look back at all, while Abu Bakr kept looking back, suddenly the two front legs of my horse fell into the sand up to the knees.

I got off the horse's back and I whipped my horse to get up. But he couldn't get his front paws out of the sand. When my horse can get his feet out of the sand and can stand up again, then at the same time a lot of dust is scattered in the air. I hesitate to use my arrows. This is something I really hate.

I was helpless and cried out to them so that I would not be harmed. They stopped. I got on my horse and approached them. I imagine, surely they will restrain me and the Messenger of Allah can do anything.

I said to the Messenger of Allah, "Indeed, your people have prepared a great reward to catch you." I'll also tell you what people are doing. Then I offered them supplies and treasures, but they didn't care about my offer. They didn't ask me anything other than to say, "Keep our trip a secret." Then I asked for writing that could guarantee my safety. For this reason, Amir bin Fuhairah was ordered to write it down on a sheet of leather. After that the Messenger of Allah continued his journey."

In a narration from Abu Bakr, he said, “We continued our journey and people were trying to find us. But no one could find us, except for Suraqah bin Malik bin Ju'shum on his horse.

"Apparently someone found us, O Messenger of Allah," I said.

He said, "Do not be afraid. Verily Allah is with us."

Finally Suraqah came home and found people still trying to find. So he said, "I have no news for you. You'd better just stay here."

Such was Suraqah, who in the morning was eager to find the Messenger of Allah , but in the afternoon she took care of him.

  1. He continued his journey until he passed Umm Ma'bad's tent. She was a woman known for being patient and persistent, sitting on the porch of her tent, feeding and drinking to anyone who passed by her tent. So when they passed by the Messenger of Allah and Abu Bakr asked for something they had.

"By Allah, if we had something, you would have no trouble getting treats. Meanwhile, none of the sheep are pregnant and this is a famine year,” said Umm Ma'bad.

The Messenger of Allah looked at an ewe by the side of the tent. He asked, "What is wrong with this ewe, O Umm Ma'bad?"

"It is an ewe that has given birth no more," he replied.

"Does he still have milk?" he asked.

"He's too old for that," he replied.

"Would you allow me to milk her?"

"Yes, for the sake of my father and mother," replied Umm Ma'bad. "If you see that the sheep can still be milked, then milk it!"

He rubbed the mammary gland pouch of the sheep by chanting the name of Allah and praying. Instantly the bag of glands swelled and enlarged. He asked for a vessel belonging to Umm Ma'bad, then milked her and covered it with the vessel.

He gave the milk to Umm Ma'bad, who immediately drank it until he was full, then he drank it himself. Then he milked again until the jar was full, then left it for Umm Ma'bad. After that they continued their journey.

Not long after, her husband came, herding the thin and weak sheep. He could not hide his surprise when he saw there was milk beside his wife.

"Where is this from?" asked Abu Ma'bad. "Even though the sheep are barren, they are no longer pregnant and can no longer be milked at home."

"No, for God's sake. There was a man who was passing by with blessings, he spoke like this and this, his situation was like this and this."

“By Allah, it is someone from the Quarisy tribe they are looking for. Tell me, O Umm Ma'bad, what are the characteristics!"

So Umm Ma'bad mentioned his characteristics clearly, as if people who heard him could see him directly. We will describe his characteristics at the end of this paper.

Abu Ma'bad said, “By Allah, he is a Quraysh whose religion they always mention. I really would love to go with him, and I really would if there was a way around it.”

At that time there was a loud voice in Mecca, which the people of Mecca could hear, but they did not know who was saying it. The voice is:

"Allah, the Lord of the Throne, bestows the best of rewards. Two gentle people passed by Umm Ma'bad's tent.

They continued their journey after stopping for a while. Truly lucky people who always accompany Muhammad. Tell me what Allah has removed from you. Because of the actions of people who do not get a reply. Banu Ka'b was truly despised because of his daughters. The fertile land is the seat of those who believe. Ask your sister about the lamb and the vessel. If you ask the sheep it will see it."

Asma' bint Abu Bakr said, "We do not know which way the Messenger of Allah went. Then suddenly a man like a jinn appeared in the lowlands of Mecca, chanting these verses. While people could hear and search for his tracks, they could not see who had spoken it. Even the voice also came from the high plains of Mecca. When we heard it, we knew that the Messenger of Allah was already walking towards Medina."

  1. In the middle of this journey the Prophet met Abu Buraidah, the leader of his people. He went to look for him and Abu Bakr, in the hope of getting the prize that the Quraysh had announced. When he met the Messenger of Allah and he asked him to speak, he immediately converted to Islam with 70 of his people. He took off his headband and tied it around his spear as a flag, exclaiming that the leader who brought security and peace had come to fill the world with justice.
  2. On the way, Rasulullah also met with Az-Zubair who had converted to Islam, along with a group of trading caravans that had returned from Syria. Az-Zubair gave a white cloth to him and Abu Bakr.
