HONG KONG - MTR Corporation said it would shut down Yuen Long Station on the West Rail Line starting at 5 p.m. this Friday. The reason is, to "ensure the safety of passengers and staff".
This Friday marks seven months since a group of men, dressed in white, attacked MTR passengers on board the train, chased several people into the mall and beat them with sticks. As a result, 45 people were hospitalized after the attack. Since that case, protesters have been organizing monthly rallies in Yuen Long.
Residents accuse police of facilitating the attack and deliberately ignoring thousands of phone calls for help. It took the police 39 minutes to respond to requests for help that evening, sparking allegations that they colluded with the attacking mob. Police have repeatedly denied the allegations.
