Turban and Robes Are Not Islamic Clothing

turban robeDDHK News, Indonesia - The figure of the NU cleric from Jombang, KH Musthofa Bisri (Gus Mus), stated that the turban (turban / turban) is not Islamic clothing. “In fact, the turban and robe are Middle Eastern, Arabic-style clothes. Not Islamic clothes, ”he said in front of hundreds of kyai and religious leaders from all over Central Java at the event Mahrajan (Festival) Guardians of Jawi at the Pendopo of Demak Regency, Saturday (22/2/2014).

According to Gus Mus, currently many preachers do not understand the preaching invites. This means that currently preaching in Indonesia is no longer in accordance with the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad.

"More often than not preaching the wisdom bil hikmah," said Gus Mus in a workshop entitled "Tracing Auliya's Footsteps, Emulating the Wisdom of Inviting".

The wearing of robes and turbans which are labeled as Islamic clothing is considered a form of Islamic capitalization. This is because capitalist Islam makes Arabian Islam incompatible with Indonesian culture. The preachers should place Islam as do saints who respect local culture.

“The robe and turban are not Islamic clothes, but Arabic clothes. Why did the Prophet Muhammad wear a robe and beard, yes, because he lived in Arabic culture, "explained Gus Mus.

"Even Abu Jahl wore a turban and robe," Gus Mus was quoted as saying netnews.com.

Can be Haram

Previously, the same thing was stated by the Hadith Science expert who was the Grand Imam of the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta, Prof. KH. Ali Mustafa Yaqub. According to him, wearing a turban and a robe can be categorized shuhrah clothes which is haram to use.

In a post on Republika Online, "Turban and Haram Robes", Prof. Ali explained, in the book of Sunan Ibn Majah, there is a hadith that the Prophet SAW said, "Whoever wears shuhrah clothes in the world, Allah SWT will wear the clothes of humiliation on the Day of Judgment, then he will burn in hell fire."

According to the scholars, shuhrah clothing is a different garment from the clothes worn by residents of the country where the wearer lives.

It is called shuhrah (popularity) clothes because the wearer with these clothes wants to be easily recognized by people.

The clothes of martyrs sometimes differ from those of the general population of a country because they are too good or different from being too bad.

When the clothes differ from others because they are too good, the wearer wants to appear different from the average person. As a result, he feels different from others so that he feels proud, arrogant, happy, happy, and so on.

When the clothes are different because they are much worse than the clothes of people in general, the wearer wants to be called a person who is ascetic, does not love the world, and so on. Based on this hadith, the scholars agree that shuhrah clothing is haram to wear.

In the context of present-day Indonesia, the type of turban and robe, which in Saudi Arabia is called tub, can be categorized as a martyr's garment because Indonesian people do not usually dress like that.

In the past century, the turban and robe may have become a tradition of clerical dress. KH Ahmad Dahlan, KH Hasyim Asy'ari, Sheikh Ahmad al-Syurkati, Imam Bonjol, and others, wore turbans. So at that time, the turban had become a tradition of the scholars.

Therefore, it's okay, scholars wear turbans. The basis is following tradition. Indeed, in a valid hadith, the Prophet (PBUH) wore a turban because the Arabs at that time also wore a turban.

So, the turban (covering the head with two to three sweet potatoes) was an Arab tradition at that time. Muslims and polytheists also wear turbans.

In the hadith narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, the Prophet SAW said, "The difference between our turban and the turban of the polytheists is to wear skullcaps first."

Top scholars from Saudi Arabia such as, the great Mufti Shaykh bin Baz rahimahullah, the great Mufti of today, Shaykh Abdul Aziz Alu Shaykh, Shaykh Shaleh bin Muhammad al-'Uthaimin, and others, all agree that wearing a turban is not a form of worship.

It is not sunna or even obligatory, but it only follows the Arab tradition at that time. This is because there is not a single authentic hadith which explains the virtues of wearing a turban. All the traditions about the virtue of wearing a turban are false traditions.

According to these scholars, the Prophet's sunnah in dressing is that we dress in clothes commonly worn by the people in which we are, unless we are guests in a country, we may wear the clothes of our own country, like Indonesians who are worshiping the pilgrimage in Mecca. .
