Basically, coloring, dyeing, or dyeing hair is legal. Even more than that, there is a suggestion from the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam in his hadith through his friend Abu Hurairah radiyallahu 'anhu:

"Indeed, the Jews and the Christians do not want to dye their hair, because that is why you are different from them." (HR Bukhari)

Moreover, the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam also said:

ان له ليكرمْه (رواه اود)

"Whoever has hair, let him honor it." (HR Abu Dawud)

The way to glorify it is by combing, oiling, and polishing it to disguise gray hair.

However, the ruling on dyeing hair pure black is disputed by scholars.

Most of the scholars are of the opinion that it is makruh, while the Syafi'iyah scholars are of the opinion that it is forbidden.

This is because there are several narrations that explain as mentioned by a friend of Jabir bin Abdillah radliyallahu 'anhu, he said:

"At the time of the fathu of Makkah, Abu Quhafah came with his head and beard white like a tsaghamah tree (which was all white, both flowers and fruit). Then the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam said: "Change this (Abu Quhafah's hair and beard) with something, but stay away from black." (HR Muslim, Nasa'i and Abu Dawud)

In another hadith, the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam said:

يخضبون الزمان السواد اصل الحمام، لا ائحة الجنة (رواه اود)

"At the end of time, there will be a people who will shine as black as a pigeon's crop. They will not smell heaven." (Narrated by Abu Dawud).

Al-Hafizh Ibn Hajar Al-'Asqalani in the book Fathul Bari Sahih Muslim, said:

“Some of the Ulama have given rukhshah (lightening) in terms of dyeing hair black, namely in jihad (war).

Others provide absolute relief. But the best opinion is that it is makruh.

Imam Nawawi is more inclined to think makruh tahrim (makruh which is close to haram). However, some groups of friends provide waivers such as; Sa'ad bin Abi Waqqash, Uqbah bin Amir, Hasan bin Ali, Husein bin Ali, & Jarir.

Dyeing Hair Makes Wudhu Invalid?

Then can hair polish block the water so that the ablution and bathing are invalid?

If the material used is safe and does not cover the hair, then ablution and bathing are valid. However, if the material used can cover the hair, then ablution and bathing are not valid.

Among the hair polish ingredients that are safe and recommended by the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam are henna and katam. He said:

"Indeed, the best materials used for polishing are henna (henna) and katam (henna)." (HR Tirmidhi, Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah).

So a Muslim must pay attention to the polish material he will use. Because lest he intend to glorify hair but instead humiliate it by damaging it through the use of unsafe and healthy polishes.

Hope it works!

Peace, mercy and blessings of God
