This is the risk of disease due to the Semeru eruption and its prevention

DDHK.ORG - Professor of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (FKUI), Prof. Tjandra Yoga Aditama, said that the smoke and volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Semeru in Lumajang, East Java, poses a risk of various diseases. Among them, upper respiratory tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, such as pneumonia and bronchitis, allergies, inflammation of the eyes and skin, and digestive tract disorders.

He also argues, hot clouds have the potential to be inhaled into the lungs, which is called inhalation trauma. "You may need a bronchoscopy. In addition, various injuries can occur, such as broken bones, wounds, and so on," said Tjandra, as reported by Antara, Sunday (5/12/2021).

In order not to be exposed to diseases caused by smoke and volcanic ash, the man who had served as Director General of Disease Control at the Ministry of Health and Director of Infectious Diseases of WHO Southeast Asia suggested several preventive measures.

First, Avoid leaving the house or evacuation site when it is not absolutely necessary. In particular, for those who live in areas affected by smoke and volcanic ash. If you have to leave the house, use protection such as a mask.

Second, cover water facilities or open wells and open water reservoirs so they are not exposed to dust. Wash all food, fruit and vegetables.

Third, immediately seek treatment at a health service facility if there are health complaints such as coughing, shortness of breath, and irritation of the eyes and skin. "For people who have chronic diseases, make sure that routine medicines must always be consumed," said Tjandra.

Fourth, make sure to always apply clean and healthy living behavior, both at home and in refugee camps. [Source: znews.id] [DDHKNews]
