Not Just the Moroccan Earthquake, Severe Floods in Libya Kill 150 People

Deadly natural disasters don't just happen in Morocco. At least 150 people have died as a result of flooding caused by Mediterranean Storm Daniel in Libya since last weekend.

"150 people died due to flooding in Libya after the storm," said an AFP report citing Libyan officials, Monday (11/9/2023), as reported by CNN Indonesia.

The spokesman for the Libyan National Army (LNA), Ahmad Mesmari, also said that at least 7 military personnel were missing.

Hurricane Daniel hit Libya last week and caused flooding in the eastern region of the country. A number of areas affected include Bayda and Derna.

As a result of the disaster, Libya's interim government declared a day of mourning for 3 days and asked that flags be flown at half-mast. Previously, Libya's interim Prime Minister, Osama Hamad, declared a state of emergency. Quoting the Associated Press, he also declared Derna a disaster zone after heavy rains and floods caused much destruction in the city. Libya also closed educational institutions such as public and private schools, and closed shops.

Not only in Libya, the storm is also expected to hit western Egypt. The Egyptian Meteorological Agency warned that Hurricane Daniel would reach the country on Monday.

"This condition will impact a number of areas in western Egypt, including Salloum, Marsa Matruh and Siwa Light," the agency said in a statement, quoted by The National.
