Do Vaccine Injections and Swab Test Break the Fast?

Assalamualaikum.

Ustadz, I want to ask a question.

These friends are confused, whether the vaccine injection and the swab test invalidate the fast?

Thank you, Ustadz.

Greetings, Fulanah

ANSWER:

Wassalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarokaatuh.

Regarding this, the Indonesian Ministry of Health, through its official website, explained that the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) decided that the Swab Test and Rapid Antigen did not break the fast. For people who want to do a swab test, either through the nose or throat, it is still permissible to do it.

This provision is contained in the MUI Fatwa Number 23 of 2021 concerning the Law of the Swab Test for the Detection of COVID-19 during Fasting, which was stipulated on April 7, 2021.

"MUI has issued a Fatwa that neither swab nor antigen tests can invalidate fasting. Therefore, this activity is still allowed, ”said Ministry of Health's spokesperson for vaccination for COVID-19, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, on Monday, April 12, 2021).

Apart from the swab test, MUI also stated that vaccination is also allowed during fasting. In line with this fatwa, vaccination activities are still ongoing to provide protection to the community.

Nadia said that technically, the implementation of vaccination in the month of Ramadan is the same as the vaccination that is currently running. It's just that the time is set, namely day and night, besides that the injection must also see the condition of the target.

"We do the vaccination process during the day, and we can also do it at night as long as it doesn't interfere with worship in this month of Ramadan. We encourage the cooperation of mosque administrators with the Puskesmas and village officials to determine the vaccination schedule, "said Nadia.

Wallâhu a'lam bish-showâb.

Regards!
