Virginia Muslims Commemorate 30 Years of Mosque Presence

the Hampton mosque Hampton mosque 2DDHK News, United States - The Muslim community of Hampton, in the state of Virginia, United States, is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the existence of the Islamic center and their mosque.

"We are part of the community," said Ahmed Noor, a mosque administrator who is also a professor of aeronautical engineering at Old Dominion University, Monday (6/1). "They (local residents) do not think of us as foreigners."

Arriving in America in 1971, Noor and his wife, Zizi, were among the first Muslims to reach the Hampton area in the 19970s. He said that initially he and his fellow Muslims stayed in touch regularly in their respective family rooms.

As the number of Muslims continued to grow, the dream of a mosque came to the Muslim community in the mid-1970s, when they bought land on Tide Mill Lane and started building a mosque.

The project, funded through donations by members of the local Muslim community and Saudi Arabian naval personnel stationed at the Little Creek naval base, began in November 1983.

The Muslim community has good relations with all circles at Hampton, including the church.

The mosque and Islamic Center, which is located at 22 Tide Mill Ln, Hampton, VA 23666, United States (757) 838-4756, is a center for Muslim activities to explore Islamic teachings and introduce them to the surrounding community.
