Plants Called Al-Qur'an and Hadith Have Potential to Become Covid-19 Medicine

DDHK.ORG - Professor of Pharmacy Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII), Professor Yandi Syukri, said that the Qur'an and the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad mentioned 27 species of plants that are easy to find and beneficial for health. These plants include black cumin (habatussauda), honey, garlic, dates, pumpkin, olives, fennel, pomegranate, grapes, arak or siwak wood, shallots, tin, jelay, and ginger.

"Finding scientific data from the Qur'an has recently increased along with modern scientific investigations. There are many verses in the Koran that explain the importance of plants, ”said Professor Yandi, Friday (12/3/2021) Indonesian CNN from Between.

A number of these plants have the potential to be developed into Covid-19 drugs. For example, ginger and black cumin.

According to Professor Yandi, one of the molecular docking studies to predict host-virus protein interactions at the entry site for SARS-CoV-2 showed an inhibitory effect of ginger (Zingiber officinale) constituents as an inhibitor of entry to the SARS-CoV-2 virus using all proteins. host and origin of the virus. "So that as an inhibitor of entry to SARS-CoV-2, ginger can also be a safe and reliable supplement to reduce infectivity, because it also has antibacterial activity and boosts immunity," he said.

In addition, ginger is also one of the main supplements that can increase immunity. Ginger is also one of the ingredients for herbal medicine recommended by the POM.

Meanwhile, black cumin or habatussauda, said Professor Yandi, has antiviral, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant, immunomodulatory, brokodilator, antihistaminic, antitussive, antipressic, and analgesic properties. These various properties make Habatussauda also potential as a Covid-19 drug.

Both types of plants have the potential to be used as Covid-19 drugs, considering that currently around 80 percent of the world's population has used herbal medicine, especially in developing countries. Herbs are used as a primary health care medium because of their easier access and full of cultural values.

"Therefore, the natural products mentioned in the Qur'an and the Prophet's Hadith have attracted the attention of botanists, biochemists and pharmacognosists, so that further research is needed," said Professor Yandi. [DDHK News]
