The One Who Prays (Should be) the Cleanest and Honest

By: Ustadz Talqis Nurdianto [Doctoral Candidate at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia]

ARE we among the cleanest people? Simple questions for us and must be answered. The person who prays should be the cleanest and most honest. These two moral values are born from every Muslim who prays.

Our prayers are not valid if the clothes worn during prayer are not clean, the place is clean, and the body is clean from unclean. One of the three elements of cleanliness is not fulfilled, the prayer is canceled. For example, the body and clothes worn for prayer are clean, if the place is unclean then it is not valid. The place for prayer and clothes are clean but the body is unclean attached so it is also not valid to pray.

Therefore, people who pray if we check their place of residence will reflect cleanliness. Even though we check this person's bathroom, then he welcomes us without asking us to wait a moment for cleaning and tidying up first.

This cleanliness should be reflected from the front of the house to the backward and hidden part of the house. This is one reflection of the prayers we do. Including, that the person who prays is the most honest.

We can pay attention when praying in congregation, who would have thought that someone beside us would come out of the prayer because his ablution was canceled because he was passing wind. Those of us beside him do not hear his voice or smell him, nor do the people front and behind him know. But the Muslim who prays comes out of his prayer line honestly.

These are the two values that are born from the prayers that we have done. Have we been like that? Allahu a'lam.
