Imprisoned for pawning an employer's watch

DDHK.ORG - On August 13, 2020, Liliyana finally returned to Indonesia. This former Indonesian migrant worker (PMI) was jailed at Lo Wu (Lo Wu Correctional Institution).

When visited by Tim Dompet Dhuafa Hong Kong and volunteers from The Islamic Union of Hong Kong on August 2 at the Castle Peak Bay Immigration Center, where she is awaiting her repatriation process, Lili told her story of being imprisoned. "I was reported to the police by my employer, because I pawned my employer's watch," said Lili, recounting.

Lili admitted that she had to pawn the watch with a value of HK $ 3,000 because she desperately needed money for medical treatment for her parents back home. “Previously, I told the mistress (employer) that I wanted to borrow money for my parents' medication. Madame has agreed. But because the madam was outside Hong Kong and hadn't been able to come back in a few days, without her knowledge I was forced to take her watch and pawn it, ”said Lili.

About three months later, the pawnshop contacted her employer and informed her about Lili's pawnshop transaction. The employer also confirmed this to Lili.

"My employer immediately reported me to the police on charges of taking his belongings," said Lili.

Lili was picked up by the police and jailed. Since the beginning of the legal process he has been running until he is put in Lo Wu prison and processed for his return to Indonesia, 11 months. That is considered light, because the employer has dropped the charges.

"The employer dropped the charges because he considered that for approximately six years I worked, I cared for his child with great affection," said Lili.

In fact, Lili plans to redeem the watch before the given time limit. But unfortunately, the employer found out first.

Lili hopes that PMI will never copy her mistakes in Hong Kong and Macau. "Even though we are in a state of necessity and in a pinch, we should never take the property of our employer, whatever its form, and pawn it, so that it does not have the same fate as me," he said. [Nur]
