Illegal Dental Practice in Hong Kong, 4 Indonesian Migrant Workers Arrested

DDHK.ORG - Four Indonesian migrant workers who have the status of domestic workers (PRT) in Hong Kong arrested after they were caught practicing illegal dental services. This was revealed by the Hong Kong authorities on Friday (16/4/2021).

Hong Kong authorities confirmed that their employers were not aware of the illegal dental practice. The four of them were later arrested for violating the provisions of the residence permit.

"The maid who was arrested has violated their conditions of stay," said a spokesman for the Hong Kong Immigration Department.

The Indonesian migrant workers, aged 31 to 35, rent a room in a flat on a weekly day off to open a practice that specializes in serving fellow Indonesian migrant workers.

According to a preliminary investigation by the Immigration Department, it was claimed that none of them had received formal dental training. And of course, they are also not officially registered dentists in the Land of Concrete.

Their practice is also claimed to increase the spread of the Covid-19 outbreak. “Apart from that, unregistered dental practice will seriously threaten the health and lives of Hong Kong residents and will likely increase the risk of the spread of the epidemic (Covid-19). The situation is completely unacceptable, ”said a spokesman for the Hong Kong Immigration Department.

Authorities confiscated their business cards and account books when they arrested the four Indonesian migrant workers at their respective work contracts on Thursday and Friday.

The investigation into this case is still ongoing. There is a possibility that there will be more arrests related to the same case.

Hong Kong law strictly states that foreign domestic workers may only perform the tasks specified in their contract at the employer's home. They are also not allowed to take other jobs.

Under the Immigration Law, the penalty for violating the conditions of stay is a fine of HK $ 50,000 and 2 years imprisonment. Under the Dentist Registration Act, pretending to be or taking or using a dentist's name or title can result in a fine of HK $ 100,000 and 3 years behind bars. [Source: SCMP] [DDHK News]
