Diabetes, can it be cured?

DDHK. ORG – Diabetes, can it be cured? This question must often haunt many people, especially sufferers.

Reporting from Kompas, Ministry of Health data for 2022 states, Indonesia is ranked third as a country in Southeast Asia with the highest number of diabetics. The prevalence of Diabetes in Indonesia reached 11,3% in that year.

To note, diabetes is a condition tell me in which the body fails to produce the required amount of insulin or cannot properly use the insulin it produces. As a result, the body cannot enter the required amount of sugar from the blood into the cells resulting in a buildup of sugar levels in the blood (glucose).

The main source of energy in the human body is glucose. Insulin resistance or lack of insulin production can cause sugar to build up in the blood. This causes serious health problems, such as chronic kidney disease, nerve damage, heart disease, vision problems, and mental health disorders.

From the official Diabetes UK website, until now there is no medicine to cure diabetes. What diabetic patients can do is manage their symptoms by maintaining blood sugar balance.

The Mayo Clinic page also states that diabetes cannot be cured. However, diabetic patients can manage their diet properly, and exercise regularly to maintain blood sugar stability.

Some diabetic patients are also often advised by doctors to take insulin therapy to control blood sugar.

To note, there are three common types of diabetes, namely type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes, and gestational diabetes.

Type 1 and type 2 diabetes can occur in both children and adults.ai during childhood and adulthood. Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that can develop during pregnancy in women who have never had diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. When a person has type 1 diabetes, the affected person's immune system destroys the insulin-making capacity of the cells in the pancreas. The damage caused by type 1 diabetes is often permanent. People who have type 1 diabetes need insulin injections for life.

Meanwhile, type 2 diabetes occurs due to insulin resistance. In this condition, the body fails to use insulin efficiently. Gradually the production of insulin in the body decreases, which in turn causes high blood sugar. Although type 2 diabetes cannot be cured, patients can still manage their symptoms by adopting a healthy lifestyle.

Whereas in patients with gestational diabetes, they also need to adopt a healthy lifestyle, regularly control blood sugar, and take insulin therapy if needed.

Gestational diabetes will usually resolve when the patient gives birth. However, patients with gestational diabetes still need regular diabetes testing six to 12 weeks after delivery.

After that, they need to have an inspection every one or three years. This is because women who have gestational diabetes are at greater risk of developing type diabetes later in life. [DDHK News]
