Tunisia's Largest Islamic Party Boycotts Presidential Election

Tunisian Islamic Party Ennahdha said it had no intention of nominating its members in the country's upcoming presidential elections. The statement comes at a time when public dissatisfaction with the composition of the new interim government cabinet is growing.

Ennahdha party spokesman Houcine Jaziri told AFP today (18/1) that his party has criticized the interim leaders who replaced Ben Ali's ousted government. Jaziri added that his party would not take part in the presidential elections which will be held in the next six months.

According to him, there would be no democratic transition without Ennahdha's presence. However, he also confirmed that this Islamic party would participate in the legislative elections.

Ghannouchi detained several Ben Ali government-era ministers, but today (18/1) he declared they were all "clean."

The new interim government is still recruiting several politicians from the Ben Ali era. The positions of prime minister, foreign minister, home affairs minister and defense minister are still held by previous ministers.
