The German opposition asked the government to recognize Islam as the official religion which is legally equal to Christianity.
Newspaper New Osnabruecker Zeitung (7/10), reported that the spokesman for the internal affairs of the parliament from the Socialist party, Dieter Vivlsbots, the recognition of Islam as the official religion will be an important indicator for the approximately four million Muslims living in Germany.
Green Party parliamentary spokesman Muhammad Kalisy said recognition of Islam as the official religion and being equated with other official religions would give Muslims a feeling of acceptance in Germany.
As stated by German President Christian Wulff in a speech celebrating German Reunification, Sunday (3/10), Islam has been accepted and became part of Germany.
Responding to the president's statement, Chancellor Angela Merkel said Muslims must comply with the German constitution and not sharia law if they wish to live in Germany. (Mel / ddhongkong.org).
