Tahallul in Hajj and Umrah

Tahallul means leaving the state of ihram. There are two kinds of tahallu in the pilgrimage: (1) tahallul awwal (tahallul shugro), and (2) tahalluts-tsani (tahallul kubro).

Tahallul awwal when having done: (1) throwing jumroh on the day of Nahr (10 Dzulhijjah), (2) shaving or shortening the hair. If you have had tahalul awwal, then you are allowed to do all the prohibitions in ihram (such as wearing perfume), wear sewn clothes and what is still not permissible is anything related to husband-wife relations.

Tahalluts-tsani plus doing thowaf ifadhoh (which includes thowaf pillars). When you have tahalluts-tsani, then everything is lawful including jima' (intimate relations) with your wife (Fiqhus Sunah, 1: 500)

Tahallul literally means lawful. In Hajj and Umrah, the meaning is that pilgrims are allowed to abstain from ihram restrictions. Tahallul is symbolized by shaving at least 3 strands of hair.

There is a mutawatir hadith from the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam that he shaved his hair during his hajj and umrah. This was also done by his companions. Some of them are completely bald during tahalul, some are shortened.

But being completely shaved during tahalul is more important than shortening it. Therefore the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam prayed,

{ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِلْمُحَلِّقِينَ قَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ ؟ قَالَ : اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِلْمُحَلِّقِينَ قَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ ؟ قَالَ : اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِلْمُحَلِّقِينَ قَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ ؟ قَالَ : وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ }

"O Allah, forgive those who are bald." The friends said, "O Messenger of Allah, how about just shortening it?" He still said, "O Allah, forgive those who are bald." The friends asked back, "O Messenger of Allah, how about just shortening it?" He still said, "O Allah, forgive those who are bald." The friends again asked, "O Messenger of Allah, how about just shortening it?" Then he replied, "And also for those who shorten it." (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim).

May we all be facilitated in the pilgrimage and Umrah perfectly.
