Muslimah Journalists Appointed as OIC's Public Relations Director

maha akil - public relations okiDDHK News, Saudi Arabia - Muslim journalist from Saudi Arabia, Maha Akeel, was appointed as Director of Information and Public Relations of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Previously, Maha Akeel was the Managing Editor of the OIC Journal in charge of disseminating information about the OIC.

The first woman to become the OIC's core committee member described her new position as "challenging" and a "big step" for women in Islamic countries, especially for women in Saudi.

"I have a big responsibility, but with the support of the secretary general and my friends, I believe I can do my job," he told Saudi Gazette, Thursday (1/5/2014).

Maha Akeel, who has worked for media at OKI for seven years, feels that she is no stranger to her new job.

"For the first time women were allowed to work at OKI, which was in 2006, when I first joined. The number is around seven women and the Secretary General will continue to increase the number of female workers, "he said.

The OIC is an international organization with 57 member countries that has a permanent representative at the United Nations (UN). The OIC was founded in Rabat, Morocco on 12 Rajab 1389 H (25 September 1969), in the First Meeting of the Leaders of the Islamic World which was held as a reaction to the burning of the Al Aqsa Mosque on August 21, 1969 by Christian and Jewish fanatics in Jerusalem.
