Jamia Mosque in Central Designated a Historic Monument

DDHK.ORG - Jamia Mosque, the oldest mosque in Hong Kong, on Friday, 20 May 2022, was designated by the Hong Kong Government as a historical monument. The mosque, which is located in the Central area, is one of the places visited by Indonesian migrant workers on religious tours which are often held before the Covid outbreak.

Jamia Mosque, which is precisely located on Shelley Street, Central, was built around 1915, with features such as a minaret crowned by a dome decorated with finials, as well as pointed multifoil arches on the entrance hall and entrance. “The Jamia Mosque is historically significant as it has witnessed the growth of the Muslim community in Hong Kong. This mosque remains an important place of worship and gathering for local Muslims," the Hong Kong government said in an official statement, as reported by RTHK.

The establishment of the Jamia Mosque as a historical monument coincides with the stipulation of two other buildings. Namely, City Hall and Lui Seng Chun in Mong Kok.

The City Hall located at Edinburgh Place, which opened in 1962, was the first multipurpose cultural complex to open to Hong Kong people.

Meanwhile, Lui Seng Chun is a four-story tong lau, or Chinese-style building, which was built in 1931 by Lui Leung, one of the founders of KMB. The family donated the building to the government in 2003 for preservation. It has since been revitalized as a center for Chinese medicine and wellness. [DDHKNews]
