This Is What Happens When We Yawn

DDHK. ORG – Yawning is a familiar thing in everyday life. Have you ever wondered why we yawn and what happens in the body during the yawning process?

Dr Reyan Saghir, MBBS, BSc as reported Republika, provides a more scientific explanation.

"Active yawning consists of involuntary opening of the mouth and maximal dilation of the jaw followed by deep inhalation and slow expiration," he explains.

Yawning, according to him, is usually accompanied when tired or bored. However, the science behind such everyday occurrences as yawning is still not fully understood.

“One of the most popular theories about why we yawn is to be more excited. When we become tired, especially at the sight of uninteresting or non-interactive repetitive stimuli such as lectures, our bodies yawn as a means of waking up,'” continues Dr. Saghir.

RESEARCH he says, has shown this to be true where a person's heart rate can be seen to rise and peak for 10 to 15 seconds after yawning, similar to a caffeine boost.

Yawning is also associated with brain cooling, which may be why you yawn more often with an increase in temperature.

"When the facial muscles relax, it allows heat to dissipate through the facial blood vessels and the incoming cool air helps reduce brain temperature through convection," says Dr. Saghir.

According to the researchers, the idea is that if it's hot, but it's actually still cold enough that breathing in a lot of air will lower our body temperature. [DDHK News]
