Friday Sermon: 7 Great Sins That Are Destructive

CAUSEWAY BAY | HONG KONG - Corp. Member Dai Dompet Dhuafa (Cordofa), Ustadz Muliadi, delivered a sermon Friday (8/11/2019) at the Mushalla Al-Falah, the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Hong Kong. The following is a summary of his sermon:

There are 7 major sins that destroy. The following is as knowledge, so that we all stay away from it as far as possible:

  1. Shirk

Shirk in the Islamic faith means associating partners with Allah by worshiping other than Allah and believing that Allah's allies are involved in creating and controlling the universe. Shirk is a great sin that cannot be forgiven:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَنْ يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ ۚ وَمَنْ مَا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ ۚ وَمَنْ يَّهإِثْماَظِعِ

"Verily, Allah will not forgive the sins of shirk, and He will forgive all sins apart from that (shirk) for whom He wills. Whoever associates Allah (commits shirk), then indeed he has committed a grave sin. " (Surah An-Nisaa ': 48).

  1. Magic

The second great sin to destroy is magic. This sin is strictly prohibited in Islam. Magic means: something that is vague or the cause is hidden. Meanwhile, according to the definition of scholars, magic is a rope and spell that is written as a means of requesting help from the devil to hurt someone (body, heart, soul, or mind) without direct contact with him.

  1. Killing the soul that is haraam by Allah

Killing people is a grave sin, resulting in violence and problems in society. Islam protects people and protects society from violence and chaos caused by killing. Islam forbids us from shedding innocent blood. In a verse of the Qur'an Allah Ta'ala explains:

أنه من قتل نفسا بغير نفس أو فساد في الأرض فكأنما قتل الناس جميعا ومن أحياها فكأنما أحيا الناس جميعا

"Whoever kills a human being, not because that person (kills) someone else, or not because he causes damage on earth, is as if he has killed the whole human being. And whoever maintains the life of a human being, it is as if he has taken care of all human life. " (Surah Al-Maaidah: 32).

  1. Take usury

Riba means setting interest or exaggerating the loan amount when repaid based on a certain percentage of the principal amount charged to the borrower. Riba is included in the 7 major sins that destroy, because usury wrongs people.

And God permitted the sale and forbade usury

"Even though Allah has made buying and selling legal and forbidden usury." (Surah Al-Baqarah: 275).

  1. Eating the rights (property) of orphans

Islam is very protective and gives great attention to the rights of orphans. Islam calls for nurturing them, educating, paying attention and protecting all their rights. Eating their property illegally is strictly prohibited and is a grave sin. Allah Ta'ala warns us to stay away from this great sin through one of the verses in the Qur'an:

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَأْكُلُونَ أَمْوَالَ الْيَتَامَىٰ ظُلْمًا إِنَّمَا يَأْكُلُونَ فِي بُطُونِهِمْ نَارًا عْنَسَ

"Surely those who eat the property of an orphan in wrongdoing, in fact they swallow the fire whole stomach and they will enter into a fiery fire (hell). (Surah An-Nisa ': 10).

  1. Run away from the battlefield

Another major sin is fleeing the battlefield in wartime. Allah Ta'ala and His Messenger (PBUH) firmly warned those who fled from the battlefield and threatened them with hellfire. Allah Ta'ala mentions in a verse in the Qur'an the following:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا لَقِيتُمُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا زَحْفًا فَلَا تُوَلُّوهُمُ الْأَدْبَارَ. ومن يولهم يومئذ دبره إلا متحرفا لقتال أو متحيزا إلى فئة فقد باء بغضب من الله ومأواه جهنم وبئس المصير

"O you who believe, when you meet unbelievers who are attacking you, do not turn your back (back). Whoever turned their backs (retreated) at that time, unless they turned for (tactics) war or wanted to join forces with other troops, then actually that person returned bringing wrath from Allah and his place is Hell Hell. And so bad their back place. (Surah al-Anfaal: 15-16).

  1. Accusing a woman of adultery

Whoever slanders a woman who commits adultery, then he will be cursed in the world and in the hereafter and will feel great suffering. Allah Ta'ala explains in one of the verses in the Quran regarding this matter, namely:

والذين يرمون المحصنات ثم لم يأتوا بأربعة شهداء فاجلدوهم ثمانين جلدة ولا تقبلوا لهم شهادة أبدا وأولئك هم الفاسقون

"And those who accuse the good women (committing adultery) and they do not bring four witnesses, then they (accusing it) beaten eighty times, and you must not accept the testimony they have made forever. And they are the ones who are wicked. (Surah An-Nur: 4).

Moving away from all these great, devastating sins is the best thing every believer should do. Knowing about major sins is important and necessary, so that we can avoid and stay away from them.

And if we have done it, whether intentionally or not, let us repent immediately, as long as the door to repentance is not closed. Perform Repentance Prayer and recite the Taubat prayer. Do it sincerely and sincerely hope for forgiveness from the God of man and do not repeat it in the future. [DDHKNews]
