Be vigilant, these are 4 signs that WhatsApp is hacked and tapped

Lately, many digital crimes have been committed via WhatsApp as the entry point. CNBC Indonesia Sunday (14/5/2023) released several features of WhatsApp accounts being tapped by other people.

Among other things, the victim will receive a message containing the One Time Password (OTP) via SMS. For information, the six-digit code is the entry gate to access WhatsApp.

OTP will be given when someone tries to enter the WA account. Keep in mind if there is a message containing the code, never give it to anyone.

Another feature is that it exits WhatsApp automatically. But someone can find out if another device is accessing the account, by pressing the three-dot icon at the top right of the application. Select the WhatsApp Web mode and you will see which device is using it.

Wiretapping can also be known if a message has been read even though the owner of the WA account has not read it. Or, if someone never feels like sending a message but a chat is sent, this could be a sign that the WhatsApp account has been hijacked. Immediately increase vigilance.

CNBC Indonesia also provides tips on how to prevent WhatsApp from being hijacked. Namely, by activating the two-step verification feature on WhatsApp.

This method makes it difficult for the perpetrators to access the victim's WA account. Because they don't know the two step verification PIN used.

Here's how to activate it:
1. Click on the three dots icon in the WhatsApp application.
2. Select Settings.
3. Go to Account settings.
4. Select Two-step verification.
5. WhatsApp will ask to activate two-step verification with a PIN. Click Enable to activate the feature.
6. Create a PIN, enter the six digits as desired.
7. Next you will be asked to enter the email address associated with the account. This is intended if one day you want to change your PIN.
