Starting today, Hong Kong requires wearing masks in public indoor spaces

DDHK.ORG - The Hong Kong GOVERNMENT requires the use of masks in all indoor public areas, including malls and building lobbies. The policy taken in an effort to increase strict measures to contain the spread of the corona virus took effect today, Thursday (23/7/2020).

The mandatory mask wearing order will be enforced for 2 weeks. A similar policy has taken effect a week ago on public transportation.

"Health Secretary Sophia Chan said all closed places such as shops and supermarkets, as well as transportation terminals and interchange stops, will be covered by the new regulation (mandatory wearing masks)," the public broadcaster RTHK reported, Wednesday (22/7/2020 ).

There have been more than 700 coronavirus infections in the past 2 weeks in Hong Kong. More than 80 percent of them are local cases.

Many patients are infected through unknown sources. This shows that the virus is being transmitted secretly in the community.

"Chan again appealed to the public to stay at home as much as possible, stop all unnecessary gatherings, and strictly adhere to the rules of wearing masks," wrote RTHK.

Stricter measures will be put in place if the situation worsens. “We are not ruling out further strict measures, which will basically focus on social distancing. Whether there will be a lockdown, of course, depends on the whole situation, "said Chan.

He warned that now is the most critical period for Hong Kong and that there will likely be a large-scale outbreak in the midst of society. [DDHKNews]
