لَبَّيْكَ Allah لْكَ لاَ شَرِيْكَ لَكَ
Labbaikallahumma labbaik, labbaika la syarika laka labbaik, innal-hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, la syarika lak
I fulfill Your call O Allah, I fulfill Your call. I fulfill Your call, You have no partner, I fulfill Your call. Verily, praise and favors are Yours, and so is the kingdom [also Yours].
Reading this recitation can be done alone, simultaneously, or may be ordered by the members/congregation to follow it. This is based on a hadith from Ibn Mas'ud ra:
From 'Abd ar-Rahman Ibn Yazid and al-Aswad Ibn Yazid both said: We heard 'Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud say in Jam' (name of place): I heard the person (Prophet peace be upon him) who sent down to him the letter al-Baqarah in that place he recited Labbaikallahumma labbaik, after that he recited the talbiyah and we also joined the talbiyah (starting in ihram) [HR Muslim].
Nafi' said that 'Abdullah bin 'Umar added lafazh talbiyah,
لَبَّيْكَ لَبَّيْكَ وَسَعْدَيْكَ وَالْخَيْرُ بِيَدَيْكَ لَبَّيْكَ وَالرَّغْبَاءُ إِلَيْكَ وَالْعَمَل ُ
“Labbaik labbaik wa sa'daik wal khoiru biyadaik war roghbaa-u ilaika wal 'amal (I fulfill Your call, I fulfill Your call, I fulfill Your call with pleasure. All goodness is in Your hands. All hope and practice is only for You).” (Narrated by Bukhari no. 1549 and Muslim no. 19).
According to Imam Abu Hanifah, the law of reading talbiyah is a valid requirement for ihrām. According to Imam Maliki, the law of reading talbiyah is obligatory. Meanwhile, according to Imam Syafi'i and Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal, the law of reading talbiyah is circumcision.
The talbiyah begins to be read after the intention of ihrām from the miqat, both ihram for hajj and ihram for umroh. The end time for reading the talbiyah is:
- When people who perform Umrah want to start tawaf for pilgrims who perform Umrah;
- When the pilgrimage has finished throwing the Jamrah Aqabah on the 10th of Dzulhijjah for the congregation performing the pilgrimage, then replace the talbiyah with the recitation of the takbir.
