Again, the Burning of the Qur'an is Condemned

Actions blasphemy against the Koran again occurred in Europe. After Sweden, a similar action in the form of burning Muslim holy books took place again in the Danish capital, Copenhagen.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) also strongly condemns the desecration of the Qur'an. “We condemn in the strongest terms the public desecration of Alquran in Denmark yesterday. The continued defense and inaction against these Islamophobic acts, in the name of freedom of expression, clearly promotes impunity," the OIC's Geneva Office said on Twitter, quoted on TRT World, Sunday (23/7/2023).

Not only condemning this action, the OIC also asked the Danish authorities to comply with their obligations under international law. The UN Human Rights Council resolution #HRC53″ against religious hatred adopted last week is also deemed to have to be upheld.

On Friday (21/7/2023), members of the right-wing Islamophobic nationalist group “Danske Patrioter (Patriot Denmark)” carried out an action of burning the Koran in front of the Iraqi Embassy in Copenhagen, Denmark. The day after, Saturday (22/7/2023), the Danish Government condemned and called this action a "disgraceful act" that did not respect other people's religions.

The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Twitter that the provocative act hurt the feelings of many people and created divisions between different religions and cultures. Affirmed, religious freedom is upheld in Denmark.

And, many citizens in the country are Muslims. "They are a valuable part of the Danish population," according to the statement as reported by Anadolu, quoted from Antara, Sunday (23/7/2023).

The country believes that freedom of expression and assembly must be respected. The ministry also added that "Denmark supports the right to protest but emphasizes that the protest must remain peaceful."

Earlier this week, Salwan Momikaz, a 37-year-old Iraqi refugee living in Sweden, was stepped on and kicked Alquran. The action was carried out by Momikaz just weeks after he burned the pages of the holy book outside a mosque in Stockholm.

Meanwhile in January this year, Rasmus Paludan, a far-right Danish leader, burned a copy Alquran in front of the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm. [Source: Republika.co.id]
