Hong Kong recorded its coldest temperature so far this winter, with temperatures dropping to 8,1 degrees at the observatory's headquarters in Tsim Sha Tsui on Saturday (23/12/2023) morning. Temperatures in other areas were reported to be even colder, with temperatures dropping to around 6 to 7 degrees.
Forecasters say temperatures will continue to be cool on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, but will gradually get warmer later in the week. “Winter will bring persistent cold weather to southern China in the next few days. "With the moderate rainy season, temperatures will gradually increase on the Guangdong coast in the middle of next week, but will remain cool in the morning," said a note provided by Hong Kong Observatory officials, as quoted by RTHK.
The State of Beton weather forecasting agency reminded residents to avoid prolonged exposure to winter winds, especially in the highlands. "Due to the possibility of icing conditions in the highlands, the public, motorists and cyclists should be aware of the dangers of slippery roads," said Observatory officials.
On Sunday (24/12/2023) afternoon, the Observatory implemented 3 weather warnings. Namely, Red Fire Danger Warning, Frost Warning and Cold Weather Warning.
Regarding the Frost Warning, the Observatory warns farmers and other concerned parties that ground frost is likely to occur Monday morning in the highlands or in northern parts of the New Territories.
Meanwhile, a Cold Weather Warning is expected to occur in Hong Kong this Sunday evening and continue until tomorrow morning. “The public is advised to wear warm clothing and ensure adequate indoor ventilation,” the Observatory wrote.
“If you know of an elderly person or person with a chronic medical condition who lives alone, please call or visit them occasionally to see if they need help.”
