3-5 June There is an Operation to Enforce Social Distance, Migrant Workers Are Asked to Rest at Home During Holidays

DDHK.ORG - Pemerintah Hong Kong urged foreign domestic workers not to leave the employer's house on the Tuen Ng Festival holiday, Friday (3/6/2022) and weekend holidays. Government officials have warned that they will enforce social distancing rules on those days.

Department of Labor officials said social distancing enforcement operations would be carried out in conjunction with police, the Department of Food and Environmental Hygiene, and other officials, from June 3 to June 5 at parks, beaches and pedestrian areas, to ensure migrant workers comply with the relevant regulations. “We remind foreign domestic workers to strictly comply with regulations and urge them to avoid gatherings (including at boarding house facilities), sharing food and other social activities on their rest days and holidays, and staying at home for rest as much as possible. to safeguard their personal health and reduce the risk of infection," a Department of Labor spokesperson said in a statement.

"We also urge employers to explain the current special circumstances when discussing holiday arrangements with their migrant workers and seek their mutual understanding," the official said.

Current social distancing rules include a ban on gatherings or gatherings of more than 4 people in public places. While wearing a mask outside is still mandatory. Violators can be fined HK$5,000.

Social distancing rules maintained

Earlier, on May 31, 2022, Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam said the Government would not provide additional easing of social distancing measures, at least for now. "We are in a kind of stagnant situation with the daily number of positive COVID-19 cases staying at around 200 and 300 cases including local infections and imported cases, but there are already more than 10 clusters of such infections in the community, especially the two most recent cases involving bars, said Carrie Lam.

"So we have to take a very cautious approach and my current position is that we probably won't introduce the third and final stage of relaxing social distancing measures before the end of June," he said.

The third or final phase of the relaxation of social distancing measures Carrie Lam is referring to includes the removal of lingering restrictions on the operation of certain establishments which include restaurants and bars. "For example, the maximum number of people at the banquet, the capacity—whether it's 75% or 85% or whether it has to go back to 100%—and live performance permits," said the official, who has no more than a month left in his term.
