156 Villages in East Java Prone to Tsunamis

DDHK.ORG - The East Java Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) said 156 villages in East Java were prone to tsunami disasters. Hundreds of villages are spread across 9 districts / cities.

"There are 156 villages with high potential for a tsunami. Most of them are in Banyuwangi 48 villages, Pacitan 24 villages and Trenggalek 13 villages. The village has been mapped, "said the East Java BPBD expert, Suban Wahyudiono, as reported by detik.com, Friday (25/9/2020).

Apart from these three areas, tsunami-prone villages are also scattered in Tulungagung, Blitar Regency and City, Malang Regency, Lumajang, and Jember. "In East Java, the tsunami disaster was mapped from 38 districts / cities, for the high tsunami disaster in 9 districts / cities," said Suban.

This was conveyed by Suban, when confirmed about the release of the results of research conducted by the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) on the potential for a tsunami along the south coast of East Java. However, it is not known when the tsunami will occur.

"The area has the potential for a tsunami. We just don't know when it happened. "There is a tsunami disaster cycle like in Banyuwangi around 1990 which killed 200 people," said Suban.

He claims that since 2019 the East Java BPBD, together with the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), as well as district and city BPBDs have socialized this to residents in 156 villages considered prone to tsunamis. "So we involved 200 members including volunteers who came to the village to provide information that this area has a high tsunami potential. We have installed each village with a tsunami-prone area placard. We give them an understanding when a tsunami occurs, such as the formula 20:20. A maximum of 20 seconds of earthquake occurs, 20 minutes of running above an altitude of 20 meters. We will socialize it, "he said. [DDHK. ORG]
