Spanish Citizens Refuse to Acquire Cordoba Mosque

DDHK News, Spain - The plans of the Spanish Catholic Church to take over the Cordoba Mosque have been heavily criticized. The move was considered a manifestation of the absence of recognition of Islamic civilization in Spain.

"Over the past few years, the diocese of Cordoba has removed the term mosque from all information leaflets," reads the petition voiced by the Muslim rights group of Cordoba in "Save The Cordoba Mosque" as reported. republica.co.id from the news agency AFP, Friday (14/3).

According to the group, many things were missing in the existence of the Islamic civilization of Cordoba. One of them is negating the historical construction of the mosque. The name Masjid Cordoba was removed by replacing the Santa Iglesia Cathedral.

The mosque of Cordoba was built between 784-786 during the reign of Caliph ABd Al-Rahman I. Initially, this mosque served as a mosque for five centuries. During the decline of the Islamic caliphate, this mosque was converted into a church by Ferdinand III, King of Castile.

Regrettably, the Church has declared control over religious sites since 2006 without notifying the government. Both Muslims and defenders of the rights of Muslims consider this step a hidden effort by the Catholic Church to suppress the legacy of Islamic civilization.

Previously, as many as 156 thousand signatures were affixed by Muslims and Christians regarding the church plan. "For the people of Cordoba, it hurts the feeling that they change history," said Antonio Manuel Rodrigues, a law expert at the University of Cordoba.

On the other hand, the Spanish Catholic Church has received support from conservative circles. They then created a counter petition by collecting more than 96 thousand signatures. (rol / localhost / project / personal / ddhongkong.org / ddhongkong.org). *
